About
Julian Saurin is a student, researcher, and teacher. He has worked in higher education throughout his career, mainly focusing on International Relations, Political Economy and Environmental Studies. My interests include questions of war and peace, imperialism, international law, human rights, political sociology, philosophy of science, social theory and the politics of literature. I have an abiding interest in the politics of the Levant and wider Middle East.
Before contributing to FUB, I taught for ten years at Middle East Technical University (Northern Cyprus Campus), and for seventeen years at the University of Sussex. He has also taught at Southampton, Birmingham, Aberystwyth universities and also the old City Polytechnic, London, as well as a brief period at Carleton University, Ottawa.
He has a long standing interest and commitment to 'education otherwise' and believes in the dignity and worth of self-improvement and the promotion of the common wealth through the challenge of learning with others. Some brief classical phrases might give you an idea of his approach 'Sapere aude' (dare to know; Latin); 'el sueno de la razon produce monstruos' (the sleep of reason produces monsters; Spanish); 'Sono pessimista con l'intelligenza, ma ottomista per la volontà' (pessimist of the intellect, optimism of the spirit; Italian); and finally, for the moment in these times of stress and speed, the old motto of the University of Sussex, '... be still and know ...'
